# Physical Setup

This page covers the physical setup of the appliance: opening the case, reinstalling the components that travel separately, powering on, and connecting for access. Before beginning, the appliance must be placed on a stable surface with sufficient room for ventilation and access to its ports.

  The BMC/NIC component and the power supply are removed for transport and reinstalled during setup. An appliance that is already assembled and has not been transported does not require the reinstallation steps.

## Procedure

  <Step title="Open the case">
    Unlatch each side of the case and remove the covers from both the front and the rear of the server.

  <Step title="Install the BMC/NIC component">
    Insert the BMC/NIC component into its slot on the front of the server until it seats fully. This component combines the baseboard management controller (BMC), which provides out-of-band management, with the network interface card (NIC). The server will not boot without it installed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Install the power supply">
    Insert the power supply until it clicks into place, then connect the power cable to the server.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply power">
    Connect the other end of the power cable to a 110V/120V outlet, then power the server on using the power button on the BMC.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect for access">
    Connect the appliance so its tools can be reached. The recommended method is through a switch; a laptop may also be connected directly. Connect a rear RJ45 connectivity interface to the switch, or to the laptop. The connection methods page describes each option in full.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect a traffic source">
    Connect a copy of network traffic to the TAP Ingress Port, from a TAP or a switch SPAN (mirror) port. This is the traffic the appliance monitors. The network capture setup page describes how the traffic source is wired.

  <Step title="Monitor initialization">
    Allow initialization to complete. Progress may be monitored over the BMC by connecting a laptop to the BMC management port and logging into the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) in a browser at its IP address, using the provided credentials. This step is optional but useful for confirming the appliance is coming online.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm readiness">
    Once initialization completes, browse to `https://home.apps.lark` to reach the home page. When it loads, the appliance is online and ready for operation. Initialization is described on the system initialization page.

  The server will not boot without the BMC/NIC component installed. If it does not start, confirm the component is fully seated before further troubleshooting.
